Anyone got any new or original ideas thy plan to do with their class on the first day back?

Am on a years supply at a school in need of improvement. Have briefly met new class if y1 children and made name tags etc.

We have inset on Weds & Thurs then children in school from Friday.

Wondering if anyone has any good ideas? Not taught this age range before and although have the curriculum planned feel a bit unsure what to do on their very first day back (don't want to scare them)!! Smile

I would think of something that would get them to do a bit of independent writing and drawing so that you can get an idea of their abilities/needs and some sort of maths. Plus some "getting to know the classroom" and practical stuff. I agree, nothing too scary, but you need to start to set the tone/routine a bit for the year.

What about a treasure hunt round the school grounds in small groups. They have to read the clues, and write down the answers at the check points (or draw a picture if that seems more fun). Prize of sticker/small certificate to take home at the treasure spot at the end.

They could then draw a picture of the school grounds (as a map or otherwise) and put x where the treasure was found.
