Need food packaging from around the world

Am starting a temp maternity cover job in two weeks and have only just been given the medium term plan.

The theme is food for the first half term and the first week involves a lesson where children look at food packaging from around the world! I don't live in the most cosmopolitan place (out in the sticks and even the nearest city is not particularly multi cultural) and have only really managed to find a few Chinese and polish pieces of packaging.

Can anyone please help? Or advise?

That sounds like a really hard one. I thought about maybe finding a website with a collection but its not that easy! Otherwise maybe just use google images (eg "classic international food packaging" to find individual images). What is the point if the lesson - what are they looking at the packaging for

Tinned Corned beef tends to be exported from afar

i don't know the age of your class or how many lessons you see them but it would make sense for you to give them all a map of the world template in class and colour or add symbols key

Which countries export grapes, wine, cheese etc

As a first homework ask them on the first day for the next lesson can they themselves bring in if possible any packaging from a different county or from a tin of fruit etc which says PRODUCT OF SPAIN or what have you.

Alternatively they leg it to the local fruit and veg market or supermarket and write notes or parents do of where different foods come from and report back that way

Hmm. Most of the food here is international or North American generic. You could google Maple Syrup? The process of making it is interesting.

They're year 1. They have to record in a venn diagram (what exactly I don't know?) and on a World map (small pics into relevant countries).

My supermarket shopping is going to take ages isn't it trying to look at the small print on labels?!!

Maybe look up foods that have 'protected origin' status like "champagne" to get a quick list of what to look out for on the supermarket. This is mainly EU only but it's a start.

Sounds like a really interesting lesson! Quite an expensive shopping list though but I guess you get to eat it all!

Do ocado deliver to where you live? They have a very comprehensive selection of world foods.

I'd also put a shout out round local friends/relatives as nearly everyone will have something that originates elsewhere and can pass on the packaging - otherwise it could cost you a fortune.

Could you go on some foreign supermarket sites and print off pictures? This is what I do for MFL lessons on food or clothing topics.

Try the shops that specialise in getting the best deals - they often source from weird places. So Aldi, Lidl, Poundsaver, HomeBargains etc

Is this a topic that they cover every year? Is there a stash in the 'resources cupboard'?

Akshully ... how useful is my suggestion? You will end up with foreign versions of 'our' food so you would have a lesson in globalisation, not diversity!

I remember a while ago there was a link in here to showing what people around the world eat in a week. It was really interesting but can't remember the link maybe somebody else does?! Soooo helpful!!

Can you go for all UK standard packaging, and where he stuff traditionally comes from - so Pasta, rice, brie etc?
Or pick a food like cheese, and look at the different types that come from different countries?
Cadburys packign is very similar all round the world, so dairy milk looks like dairy milk in Hong Kong and Malaysia, as well as UK.

Divide students in to groups and give each a country (draw a flag out of a hat, or glue flags to front of playing cards and get them to pick a card - coud use this as a method of group selection). Get them to research food brands around the world (direct them to online grocery stores in different countries if you need to scaffold). Get them to print pictures and make collages. Cross curriculum priorities with ICT, geography and art.

Oranges and bananas usually have a Spanish or Costa Rican sticker on them, if that helps!

The school has created a new class and I went in yesterday to find an empty room! Am now having to buy my own resources, pencil pots, make number lines etc. I'm literally starting with nothing!!!
