A friend who did her PGCE at Tavistock recently did feel that the whole special measures thing was a bit unfair. (It is out of SMs now BTW).

She thought the school was OK, and in fact several children from the private school in Tavy (Kelly College) leave after 16 to do A levels at Tavy because they offer a better choice than Kelly.

Having said that, my friend has just decided to send her son to Callington Community College rather than Tavy.

It would be worth you looking at Callington. It's about 20-30 minutes away, but do-able from Tavistock. It is big, and is in the process of converting to an academy (the first in Cornwall I believe).

I have never been one to bad mouth a school but I would say that Callington School is not that good. Tavistock is probably slightly worse. You might have more luck in Saltash. Also, watch out. Tavistock is in Devon. Callington is in Cornwall. You may find the LA are not keen on your crossing the border.
