Which Union do/should Teaching Assistants belong to?

And if your school is becoming an Academy does that make it more of less important to be in a Union?

Are any unions recognised at your school for collective bargaining purposes? If so, it is usually best to be in that one.

If there are no unions with formal agreements, it is still a good idea to be in the one that everyone else on your grade is.

Personally I wouldn't ever consider not being in a union...

At my school, the TA's are in the GMB - it's best if you are all in the same one, as you're more likely to get a union rep to come and visit you.

It is absolutely vital that you are in a union if your school is becoming an academy. You are being taken over by a private company that will eventually want to make a profit and they will screw you over given half a chance. (Sorry to be so pessimistic!)
