Are you signed up to Khan Academy?

I hear a lot of good things about this and am wondering whether to get a sign-on for the DSs. I looked on youtube but of course, can't 'target' what'll be useful for them out of the hundreds of entries.

Have you used it? Is it very American?

TIA

Yes we use it a lot, and it's bloody brilliant. I think Sal Khan, the founder, is a bit of a hero.

Go to the website www.khanacademy.org (it's easy to navigate) and have a look at some videos.

DS2 watches these. I didn't realise that a login was required. I thought anyone could watch them?

Dillytante · 28/05/2013 22:35

I've used it recently for stats tutorials. It's excellent.

Dillytante · 28/05/2013 22:36

You just have to give an email to sign in.

CrabbyBigBottom · 28/05/2013 22:58

Three anyone can watch them. If you create an account (completely free) then it tracks your progress, what you watch and what exercises you do, awards you badges and stuff, and suggests topics to study. Good for keeping track of what you've been working on, and getting the 'awards' is a good motivator for DD.

Feature about him on Newsnight (BBC2) now.

musu · 28/05/2013 23:17

Michael Gove is a huge fan and describes him as a 'visionary'. Not sure that is a welcome recommendation Smile

willyoulistentome · 28/05/2013 23:19

So there's no charge involved?

claig · 28/05/2013 23:21

No charge, it is free

Dillytante · 29/05/2013 00:20

I'm sure Gove loves him, free teaching! Let's get all our kids to learn stuff for free of the internet instead of employing real life teachers.

I'd never heard of him before this thread but watched some videos last night as well as seeing him be interviewed on NN (and see him present at one of the TED forums) and I was hugely impressed. Great for ds who doesn't enjoy learning his times tables but would love the videos they have for that.

CrabbyBigBottom · 29/05/2013 10:18

He's great isn,t he Musu - I think I've got a little crush on him! Grin

musu · 29/05/2013 12:17

I was transfixed last night watching him. I'm just amazed I'd never even heard of him before. I loved the videos and hope I can persuade ds to watch some of them too. I watched videos on multipication and liked how the process was so clearly explained.

acebaby · 29/05/2013 18:21

He's fantastic. I even get my masters students to watch the advanced calculus and stats ones. Both my boys (7 and 5) have learnt loads.

streakybacon · 30/05/2013 10:14

Ds uses it a lot for Maths and sciences. Khan is very popular in home ed circles - we're always on the lookout for good, free resources Grin.
