At the beginning of year 3 ds will be just 7. I am been made to feel unreasonable as I feel he is too young to go away from home for 3 nights. This is new as the trip normally taken in year 4 which I wouldn't have a problem with.
Am I being neuotic? :-)

My primary school had residentials from y3 up, although that was only one night, then 2 in y4 and so on. I do think some children didn't cope and one had to be picked up (only an hour away from home so not too difficult for parents with cars).

I have also helped supervise pony camps at a stables a few times, where the youngest campers are 8. Sometimes they do not cope and go home after only one night, but some do manage it well.

I would take into account distance, and if the child couldn't easily be picked up, I wouldn't send them at this age, I don't think, especially if they have concerns. If it's close- say an hour or so away- then that's different and hopefully he can be persuaded to try it and you can pick him up if there's a problem?
