DD lacks this, from what ive gathered from her homework...or is it me ???
Really really simple stuff...theres a picture of a sink with a flannel and taps and soap.
Theres is step by step instructions of how to wash your hands.
1st question...What 2 things do you need to wash your hands.
A sink and soap.

Well yes, but is the answer not water and soap...?

Not sure if its me, or her, or the homework. LOL!

It's the homework - that's crap!

Just read out the list and asked DD1 (who is 24 and quite intelligent) and she said water and soap. (You don't need a sink, do you? You could do it in a puddle!)

charliecat · 09/05/2006 18:58

ah...so its dd whos not ??? analizing ??? the question properly then, as sink was her answer....so her comprehension is dodgy?

Ohhh - I thought you were saying sink was supposed to be the best answer. I'm guessing the sink is the biggest thing in the picture - maybe that made her think it was most important? How old is she?

tamum · 09/05/2006 19:02

To be fair, I don't suppose she's ever seen a sink that didn't have water available from it, so I think her answer makes perfect sense! (agree with Janh, rubbish question).

charliecat · 09/05/2006 19:15

shes 8. Also last nights homework was make a picture out of these shapes...square, triangle pentagon bla bla and she shot up the stairs and came down stairs gutted that her random shapes across the page hadnt made a house on the paper :(

charliecat · 09/05/2006 20:03

Oh right! done a fish in the end, will be seeing later if she can do it herself without prompting.

got annoyed with ds because he just wasn't listening to what i was saying. was only counting in 5 10 15 and had to colour and then add in the missing numbers at the bottom. grrrrr

JanH · 09/05/2006 20:06

I know a very clever lad - about 23 now and with a v good job - who had a terrible time with stuff like this all the way through school, because he looks at everything differently from everybody else - nothing is straightforward for some kids.

charliecat, I think all you can do for her is talk questions like this through with her making suggestions and giving her possible alternatives. I still think it was a crap question Grin but you could say "what about this?" or "have you thought about that?" and try to encourage her to look at things from another angle each time.

Whizzz · 09/05/2006 20:08

but surely at 8 she doesn't have the experience to analyse like 'grown ups' do ? ie to think that indeed you could wash your hands in a puddle therefore water + soap is more important than the sink ??

charliecat · 09/05/2006 20:09

I do that Jan :), shes a whizz at some things and other things stump her dead...I sort of NEED her to pass her 11 plus LOL so this is important.
Have a few years yet to work on it :)
