Becoming an academy

Our primary school is looking to become an academy - I'm embarrassed to say I dont really understand what that means.

Does anyone have an idiot's guide to whether its a good idea or not please?

You may be right but I am sceptical. If privatisation was the intention I would have expected new academies to be required to have sponsors, instead of which academies are currently encouraged to have no sponsor.

Well then that's a right old mess, isn't it?

I wonder if it is possible to make more of a mess of state education than the current government is attempting to do. It really is quite spectacular.
