Sept 2017 - he/she'll be turning 5

You start school in the year you turn 5 so your dc will be just 5 when starting and probably the oldest in the year.

Will be a 2017 start.

Ha, thanks! She was due on the 18th of August so was fretting about being on the other end of that scale.. There was a point during labour where I realised she was going to cost me an extra year of childcare too!

DS was due 14th Sept and ended up born 31 st August at 11.37pm...about as close to the deadline as can be. I wished I had kept my legs crossed for longer!!! (during birth not the conception!!)

(He is now in yr3 and is fine)....

I read that in a lighthearted way. I am a late August baby, I don't think I was ever worried about being the youngest in the class, I quite liked it.

woah JulyMom you have taken that waayy too personally. The July - Oct time period is a tricky one to navigate because you either end up with the oldest children or the youngest children in the class, for some children it can make a real difference to how ready/not ready they are for school.

It does mean an extra year of childcare costs if you have a baby born early Sept. Ds was due in August and about half of my NCT lot were due and had babies early Sept. It seemed odd sending ds to school when his friends were a few weeks younger and had another year at home/nursery.

I've had to suck up the extra year of childcare costs, thanks to DD being an early Sept baby. Minor (but expensive) 'irritation'. She's due to start this Sept, but is already very, very ready for it.

It's always fucking raining on my kids' birthdays.

only this month we getting free 15hours as its term after 3rd birthday is he was 3 in december she ould have got funding in jan so few weeks instead i paid 2terms preschool to hold her place.

2009 was bit of a boom year im hoping school application time that most of babies born earlier year and gets same school has her older sister.

makes things tricky for younger brother too hes april 2011 so cant start when hes 4half year later in 2015. seems weird i can defer him until term after 5th birthday but I cant start daughter earlier.

I was july baby. I dont think all younger ones are disadvantaged some appear to do quite well. I was july born and hubby 31st august he moans he felt disadvantaged in rugby.

Then in scotland they have different cut off dates again.

But, the fact is that there are significant differences to be played out by just a single day's birthday difference..

Sorry JulyMom, but as people have said it was all lighthearted- of course I would have happily had her arrive on time (and certainly when 14 days overdue was wishing she had)!

Matters for sport. Apparently there was a study in the US a few years back and a disproportionate number of pro sports players had Jan/Feb/March birthdays (little league over there goes on calendar years). They're a bit older so bigger and stronger and likely to do well, doing well = enjoying it more = carrying on with it.

Mine has an August birthday. Am happy that he'll go to school earlier as I'd rather he was stretched than bored. Hopefully he'll be emotionally ready.

I guess my point is that you win some, you lose some.

FWIW, in the UK, I would have bribed the midwife to put Sept 1st on a birth certificate if a DC was born at 11:59 on Aug 31st. All statistics point to older DC doing better certainly at school if not 'in life' in general. Note I put statistically, so that those who pile on to tell us how brilliantly their Aug 31st 4 year old is doing can step away now- unless they are keen to prove they don't understand what statistics are and mean!

Had I been younger, ie with more 'conception time' to play with, I would have attempted a mid Jan birthday to advantage my DC in both possible education systems, the one they were born into abroad, and here. As it is, they're both May! (though a MC in between would've been Feb).

Oxbridge is disproportionately filled with 1st term birthdays, too, Ice.

Finally, I recall in the Sloan Ranger Handbook or maybe Diary (anyone remember that?!) that they mentioned Breeding Season, for gun dogs, horses- and parents- in order to try and make sure Hugo or Jocasta was amongst the eldest at Harrow or Downe House, I gather .
