boys going baretop for pe in junior school

hi my two sons go to junior school one in year 6 and one in year 4. They are happy at school but they have a strict policy on indoor pe kit where the girls wear leotards and boys just wear black or white shorts and they are expected to strip to the waist and go baretop.
This used to happen years ago in schools but I thought schools were more relaxed with kit these days. It is not a problem and the boys havent complained but does baretop pe for boys still go on in some schools

I have no idea but I would have thought wearing a vest wouldn't have been a problem?

Gillian76 · 09/04/2006 18:24

Never heard of such a thing, but don't know that I'd be delighted about it!

Spacecadet · 09/04/2006 18:25

no at our local primary school they were t shirts, has the school explained its pe policy to you as to why they have to go baretop?

zippitippitoes · 09/04/2006 18:26

it sounds old fashioned

milward · 09/04/2006 18:28

have they said why they can't wear vests or t-shirts? sounds strange to me.

robinpud · 09/04/2006 18:32

bethand- this sound distinctly contrary to the very strict health and safety policy than now surrounds PE. Our little ones used to do it in pants and vest as it took so long to get them into kit but now they have to wear shorts and top so there is at least 1 lasyer between them and ? an adult ?? we were told it was a child protection issue. Baalpe 9 pe advisory body in uk) advise would be to wear a top for definite.

At our school boys and girls both have to wear black shorts and the schools t-shirt. I don't think I would be happy out boys not being able to wear a top - can't think what the reason would be.

"so there is at least 1 lasyer between them and ? an adult..."

This sort of thing is bloody mad! What, an adult's hand might toch a child's skin! Oh no! Seriously though, I just do not see that a pervert could actually do anything in a school gym full of children, with other members of staff passing through at any time.

Milliways · 11/04/2006 18:38

What about rope burns etc on gym equipment. Surely it is safer to wear a top?

Caligula · 11/04/2006 18:52

Sounds like a wierdie school

chocolateshoes · 11/04/2006 19:26

I have never heard of such a thing these dys & am not sure I'd be too keen.

Cookey · 12/04/2006 15:00

fair point about the rope burns, but does this not apply equally to legs, arms, bare feet gripping the rope etc?
