Selection procedures

We are making applications to new schools for DD (Y4 in a French school). The on-line enrollment form for one of our preferred options went live this morning and I have had a good look at the form. It's basically a set of dull admin questions and two personal statements by the parents (why this school? plus character description of child). In addition, there will be an assessment morning in late April.

Is this fantastically socially biased? Or is it just me?

not just you ....
no longer legal in UK state schools

I find that alarming... and yes, very divisive. So, in theory, if every school you applied to rejected your child, is the LA or equivalent required to find your child a school place? Or can schools refuse to accept a child on the parents' description alone?

Is this a fee paying or state funded school?
if the former then you might think that their approach to selection tells you quite a lot about the school...

Bonsoir lives in France ....... but the issues of back door selection appear to be universal / international

Thanks for the confirmation Smile.

This is a French "private" sous contrat school ie fees are payable, though they are peanuts compared to English school fees because the school must offer the French NC and teachers are employed by and paid for by the state.

French private sous contrat schools are allowed to select pupils by whatever means they desire. It's just a bit of an eye-opener when you compare and contrast...
