American geography is UK schools?

Hi,

I wonder if someone knows if and when UK schools teach American geography in schools.

My neighbour was about to throw out this lovely big map for kids, it has all the US states and major cities as well as main trade for each state. It's big and framed and really lovely. I wanted to donate it to a school to hang in class, but not sure when they would teach this.

Anyone know?

Not sure they do. You could offer it to a local school/geography department and see if they want it.

They don't teach American history until last few years of school (sometimes) either. A school might still want the map though. It sounds great.

I dont think its taught at all. Not in NI anyway.

If it's any help I did the geography of North America for A level... but it was a good few years ago.

when you say UK do you mean england?

in Scotland there's a subject called 'modern studies' where we did topics including the US electoral system - it would be helpful for that..

oh, and yes sorry, modern studies is a standard grade subject so S1 to S4.

Not in my experience. We do Scottish geography to death (more so since SNP became govt) as well as British and European geography. The world geography is where America fits in and it's not done in much depth tbh.

American schools don't tend to do the geography of anywhere else either!

Regional geography is a real thing in geographical scholarship (although it's not enormously fashionable atm). The CSYS geog curriculum used to be mostly a regional geography of either the USA or China. I have no doubt things are very different now in the advanced higher.

You might be best off asking your local schools if they might want it, rather than trying to second guess them.

Charity shop. Ebay. Freecycle. Map freaks like me would snap it up. How large does it measure?

Relatively little "location geography" (i.e. being able to name countries, states and capitals) is done nowadays; the focus tends to be on physical geography like how the sea transforms the landscape and glaciers, and human geography like development and population & migration.

I second the suggestion of eBaying / charity shopping it.

Nope, as the others said above, the stuff on this US map won't be taught in British schools, just as geography of the UK won't be taught in US schools.

eBay it! Or give it away. People like me, and my DC who attended elementary school in CA, who loved it there) will buy it.
