Oxford reading tree, what level should yr1 child be on?

I'm asking as have boy/girl twins and they are on very different levels. I'm worried my son not doing as well as he should, asked his teacher and she said "he seems okay" which is not helpful

Personally, having seen/seeing two dds go through Y1, I honestly don't think there is a clear cut 'should' about the levels at this stage.

What is worrying you about your son? FWIW, the boys in both my dds' classes at this age suddenly lost all interest (if they ever had any) in reading, and were far less motivated to read than the girls - bar one or two. They started to pick up again in Y2, and had caught up with the girls by Y3. I've no idea if this is common, but its certainly my experience!

Mine's on 5 if that helps. he went into Y1 on 3 and the teacher bumped him up. he's coping well. I have seen a real spread though, think ds is middling though not sure.

In DD's class they range from pink to turquoise.

I would say IME from DD's class that at this stage blue/green has the greatest concentration of children

They range from red level to library (ie beyond lime) in dd2's class, but most are on yellow/blue/green. But as you asked about ORT, I'm not sure how colours correlate - we do have ORT, amongst other reading schemes, but I can't remember levels!

Ds1 was on blue in reception, has gone down to red in y1 . But dd was on god knows what at that age, I would think that a fairly wide spread would be standard.

Colours? Oooh i didn't know about colours. Mine's on Storyworlds stage 5? Is that not ORT?

On the basis of the above guide blue/green would be ORT 5/6

Forgot to say, that guide also gives estimated NC levels as well

Scotland here... My DS is in Primary 2 (6yrs) and the reading groups range from ORT stage 9 - 4.

Last year, in primary 1, so 5 yrs, the class ended the year in 3 reading groups on stages 6,5,4 respectively.

There's one girl on Stage 6, my DS's on Stage 5, but there are two still on Stage 2 and others in between. Personally I think most girls do better than boys on the whole, but I may be wrong.

'He seems Ok ' is probably what he is: OK!
They are on whatever level they have progressed to. Children pick up reading at very different speeds. Boys are often slower than girls. As long as they are making progress (though it may seem so slooooooow) they are 'ok'.

My DC took ages to become fluent and then sped towards a very precocious 'reading age'.

I read with year one at DS's school. The children there range from pink level to gold. The 'average child' hate that term but don't know how else to describe it would be on blue or green band.

Whay fuzzymum said. I know that in DS's class there is at least one child still on pink (a boy) and one on gold (a girl). DS is on green.

In DD class there are 3 boys on 8 ORT. DD is next I think on 6 with one other girl and the majority are on 2-5
Not just girls streaking ahead!
I would hazard a guess that 4 is about the middle.
