Colet Court

Am looking at Colet Court 11+ deferred entry which my son would take in Feb of year 5. The syllabus is on the website but for English it says there is a 45 minute paper for composition writing. Does anyone know if this is 45 mins to write one essay, or a selection of shorter essays? There is a lot of detail about what the maths paper covers, but not very much at all about the English. Any help gratefully received.

Try the bond papers for starters. There are some websites that post past papers from similar schools (can't remember if CC was on there) but they do seem to follow a similar format. I'll post again of I can remember the name of it.

Many thanks Frontpaw, that's a very helpful website.
Anyone with knowledge of the format of the 11+ deferred for Colet Court out there?

We are a few years off now (thanks goodness) but there a probably some discussion sites out there...

I am sure someone will come along with real insights! If you look at the past papers on the 11plus site you will see a pattern and there is also a 'prep' section to help you get your plans together.

Good luck! Have you asked your current school if they have any past papers you can have?

Current school is a state primary so offers no help in preparing for the independent sector. The thing about the deferred entry is that they take it in year 5, and the papers on the sites are geared towards children in year 6. I can see that there are additional topics on the maths syllabus for the 11+ exam, that are not on the 11+ deferred list. With English it's harder to tell - it just says composition, 45 minutes.
However, the site is useful for common composition titles/themes, so we'll definitely look at those.
Thanks again.

I would have a chat with your head - I am sure he/she will be supportive. A pupil going on to CC will look very good for the school after all. Have you thought of getting a tutor?

DS2 sat 10+ at Colet Court. It's one story or long piece of writing and I think there's a choice so they can write discursively or creatively. I don't think it's much different from the 11+ exams except a bit easier!

Many thanks both.

Look for the Galore Park "So you really want to Learn English". This fits in more closely with what will have been done in Prep Schools and though used as a text book is suitable for home use.

We found it really useful for 11+ prep for a child who is a lot more comfortable with maths than English.
