Gift aid through school or PTA

Does anyones school have a Gift Aid scheme set either with the school registered as a charity or with the PTA registered as the charity?
If so - how did you go about it? What sort of income could an average Primary School (180 pupils) expect to generate through this?
Any help appreciated - I personally feel it's an area not being addressed at our school - we could be "sat" on an amount of money we never realised existed!

our PTA is the registered charity - think that's the usual way for a state school

being a registered charity has other benfits - e.g we get special advertising rate in local paper

so how do you go about becoming a registered charity? I've read on the internet a few schools are the charity, others have the PTA as the charity. Ours is a Catholic primary (don't know if that makes any difference!)
