Wearing tights for PE.

DD (age 8 - year 4) informed me today that she has been keeping her tights on for PE and then wearing them for the rest of the day.

I find this a horrible thought. Now I know they don't get 'sweaty' at this age but surely they should wear something else? They have socks in their PE bag but can wear their tights if they want.

Can't you just ask her to make sure she puts her socks on?

It isn't totally relevant because she leaves that school today but I was just surprised that the teacher's encourage them to wear the same underclothes all day and for PE.

We were never allowed to - didn't matter whether it was cold or not outside we were in shorts and short socks!

The teacher is probably just so hassled at trying to get all those kids to get undressed/dressed then undressed/dressed again that she doesn't care what they're wearing

I can remember playing hockey in the snow in a teeny skirt and aertex shirt...now those were the days.

If they are using apparatus, they certainly shouldn't be wearing tights as it's impossible to grip wall bars etc.

I think that the teacher should be making sure that they are wearing PE socks. I was a year 4 teacher and I would only expect to tell the children once about this sort of thing!

Oooh Sorenlorensen, you have brought back memories - orange aertex shirt, brown gym knickers and teeny skirt here. Plus orange hockey socks just to set the whole outfit off! And our PE mistress nicely covered up in jogging bottoms and jacket telling us to shut up when we moaned about the cold: 'Play up, gels, exercise will keep you warm!'....

Yuk! PE should be abolished at schools. They never have decent shower facilities, anyhow.

Can you opt your child out of it? I'd rather mine go to lessons we select for them based on their own interests.

in that case I would be v unhealthy, as would never have chosen a single sport.

my school had no showers at all - and we wore our socks for games. We had a 40 minute PE/games session every day up til O levels. the school must have stank!

it not going to kill her or naything i wouldnt be arsed.

if i was arsed - i would put her long socks on that day so she didn't have to perform the "knicker pulling down" action that you do when you are removinf tights - this could be embarassing

Polgara2 · 18/02/2006 17:00

Hmm - dd1 does this I think - have never given it a second thought. Why does it matter? Can't see the harm myself sorry. Echo the 'knicker pulling down' action thought though .

Sorry I don't see a problem at this age. It is the samne as them runningat playtime and I'm sure you wouldn't expect her to change her tights for that.
