What does your school do with old uniform?

My DS's primary school's PTA has got masses and masses of old uniform (mostly jumpers, but also trousers, skirts, polo shirts etc) knocking around. There are regular 2nd hand sales, but basically the supply of old uniform far outstrips the demand.

We've thought about donating it all to charity, or maybe selling it for rags, but wondered what other schools have done - ideally it would raise some money for the school.

Thanks!

We have a regular shop for ours

DD's school has a school shop, run by the PTA, where they sell both new and second hand school uniform and other bits. It's open every other week. You can take old uniform items in, cleaned and pressed and can chose to accept the money yourself when it is sold or donate it to school funds.

The school I work at has the odd uniform sale, again run by the PTA, I think. This is all donated second hand with money going to school funds.

DDs primary had a shop like Hula's. AFAIK there was good turnover. I assume that if there was any excess it would have gone into the charity bag (something like Bags2School IIRC) which the school used anyway to raise funds

Our school has a second hand uniform shop to sell on good quality uniform. They also hold jumble sales, and a twice yearly "bags to schools" collection to raise funds.

You can google bags to school for more info, ( using iPad & can't figure out how o link without a mouse)

Many thanks, JustGBM, the Bag to School thing sounds like what we're after

Our primary used to sell it REALLY cheap -50p a sweatshirt etc so it all went very quickly.

The rag man gives £1 a bag to charity shops so unsaleable stuff can be shifted that way.

Bag to school is what I do with uniform that's been through two DDs.

colditz · 13/03/2012 11:09

They dump it on a table at the end of the school year, and everyone has a free-for-all and takes what fits!

CMOTDibbler · 13/03/2012 11:13

We have termly second hand sales, and there isn't much left.

If you have loads, I'd put a bit of effort into sorting it into sizes, then sell it really cheap - maybe do some bundles too, like 5 polo shirts for £1.

When is the uniform sale on ? Is it a time that parents can actually get there ?

PiedWagtail · 13/03/2012 22:11

Regular sales run byt the PTA for the good stuff, and rag bag the rest.

Ours has a linked school in Mozambique that they support in conjunction with a local senior school. All the surplus summer uniform that does not go at the second hand sales is sent out there on an annual basis. Funny to think of little girls in Africa running about in the same uniform as DD but i think its a lovely idea.

Not sure what they do with the winter uniform
