So, I am fairly new to this PTA stuff and next mtg, we're being canvassed for our ideas of how to raise funds at the school fair - what stalls/stands/activities etc.

Last year, it was face painting, nail varnishing, tombola, human fruit machines, bric-a-brac.

This year the fair is being held a day before Mothering Sunday - so we could do something along that vein.

Do you have any ideas?

The Bonus Ball is easy money. Sell the numbers 1 to 49 for £1 each. Winner is bonus ball drawn at Lotto draw. £25 to winner, £24 to school. can also sell for the Wed night draw.

Lemonade fishing is popular - can't understand why kids queue up to spend 30p for chance to win a bottle of something cheap that cost less per bottle from Asda

Instead of entrance fee for kids, bring a filled jar for a tombola.

Tile painting - get loads of cheap white kitchen tiles which kids paint at the fair.

Splat the rat is fun (filled sock - not rat btw!)

Maggot racing if you can get the racecourse from someone - hilarious - kids love it!

Hire your local swimming pool for an hour one evening and sell family tickets.

Our pool for example costs £80 per hour including lifeguards. PTA sell family tickets for £5 -a bargain for a family of 4 !
You have a great early evening out as a family, kids get to play with their friends in the pool and as an added bonus they sleep really well that night

We did a quiz and raised loads (sold it in local pubs as well as at playgroup fete). Took a bit of effort thinking up questions, typing it and organising the whole thing but we raised over £500 on that alone @ £1 each. The prizes were quite good though, begged from local businesses/restaurants.

How does a human fruit machine work?

nikkie · 29/01/2006 19:52

chocolates on cards.
Different sizes of chocs (celebrations up to large bars) all on separate cards, pick card out of separate pack win whatever your card matches. Usually 20p a go round here very popular with kids!

pool idea is great

Thre are some fab ideas - thanks so much. Will put forward the race night, pool idea and quiz nights as they sound like something I'd go to.

On the day itself, love the tile painting, kids room for Mothers day pressies and choc on a card.

Hallgerda, for the human fruit machine, you get 3 volunteers (dads) and put and apron on each of them with a pocket at the front filled with toy fruit. Kid comes along, pays 20p, pulls on of the dad's arms down, dads make fruit machine noise (which kids find v funny) and produce a fuit out of the apron pocket. If they all choose the same, kid is a winner.
