How old is your ds, and what is important to you about his education?

Ladymuck · 15/02/2012 08:03

And have you visited both?

And are both locations easy for drop off and pick up based on where you live/work. As you (or someone) will be doing it every day for a good few years.

Ds is 7.planning to visit cumnor house on open day next month and elmhurst next week.
Current school is okay but guess these schools can give him more opportunities in terms of academic and sports

Sportswise I would say that Cumnor invest more than Elmhurst, but they also have more boys, so chances of getting into A or B team are harder. Other teams get matches, but not as many or the best training. That said there are plenty of sports clubs in the area and many Cumnor and Elmhurst boys at them.

I guess in part it depends on what you want to do at secondary. If you are looking at grammar schools then Elmhurst has more boys aiming for these, and prepares specifically for them. Cumnor doesn't. Elmhurst goes to Year 6, and most boys leave then (very few at 10+). Cumnor has a mix of boys leaving at 10+, 11+ and 13+ mainly to Whitgift and Trinity. Whichever school you go to, you will very probably end up doing some tutoring on top when it comes to the entrance assessments.

Both sites are relatively cramped for the number of boys on site, though Cumnor has gained some additional space by moving Reception and Year 1 to the former Lodge school site in Purley. Parking is a nightmare for both schools I'm afraid.

I think that you'll get an insight when you look around. Don't be put off by generalities - yeargroups and class sizes vary dramatically year by year so check the numbers in each school for your yeargroup.
