Do your children ever completely amaze you by what they learn at school?

I've just bought a new CD of Mozart's Requiem. I put in on and said to my dd (who is 7) "this is one of the finest pieces of music ever written". She said "Oh, we have sung parts of this in school. Did you know that all of it after the Lacrimosa was written by Mozart's pupil, because Mozart had died half way through?"

I was completely stunned.

DS1 (who only started in Reception) often amazes me too. One night last term was brining them back from choir practice (as I have to take them with me because DH is working) and it was a really clear night.

can we see any planets? And the realed off the names of all the planets - which is more than I can do most days.

They are amazing aren't they.
Mind you ds is learning about Islam and Eid in reception.... and came back with Mehndi patterns on his hands. Oh well, one Indian sub-continental religion is much the same as another I suppose.... not!

I didn't think Mehndi patterns were 'religion' based - are they not bridal patterns used in South Asia and Africa??

I always thought they were specifically Hindu. I've been to a few muslim weddings and haven't seen them... but maybe I'm wrong!! . Perhaps I should repeat my reception year

My Sikh friend used to have them after weddings, so it isn't only Hindus

I don't know - don't think I learned about it in school - I'm sure that Islam isn't allowed any permanet tattoos so used henna art too - but could be wrong......

i know a muslim family and they put those patterns on their hands

just done a google and found this - judging from where it's taken from (Experience Islam) I'd say it's used in Islam too

Muslims in the sub-continent have adopted a lot of Hindu wedding traditions so they do use mehndi, but AFAIK they are also used in Arab countries, but definitely cultural rather than religious.

I'll never forget when my DD who was 3 at the time came back from school and counted to 10 in Spanish. DH and I stood there gobsmacked and after enquiring it turned out that she sits next to a spanish girl!
Unfortunately the girl left, otherwise I might have had a bilingual child

9yo dd came home very excited because they'd been taught to meditate in school today! 'By eck, school weren't like that in my day, lassie!'

DS1 (6) arrived with us to friends' house for lunch, went into the living room and said, "that's a Kadinsky abstract, isn't it?" pointing to a picture on their wall. We all looked at each other, gobsmacked. Turns out they had just been doing 'kadinskys' in Art that week...

My 4 year olds do meditation at school - maybe it's just a chance for the teachers to have a breather a cup of coffee
