5 ????
DD has counted to 10 aided - copying DS

Depends on the child, I think. Some have an interest in numbers and will count. Ds1 was almost obsessive about them. Others are busy learning other things.

oohhh, can I have a boasting moment? dd (turned 2 last month) can count up to 8. Am ridiculuosly proud of this achievement! quite often forgets 7 or 5 though!

coppertop · 01/11/2003 18:08

Ds1 misses out 5 too. What is it about that number??

ds2 2.4 can count to 10 when just reeling off the numbers. He has learnt it from ds1. But if counting actual items never gets further than 3.

anais · 01/11/2003 20:21

My ds was counting to 100 at age 2.5, dd is 2.5 now and can count to 10.

codswallop · 01/11/2003 20:24

counting makes no diff - its just repetition. Its looking at a group of things and knowing how many there are....

ds was counting groups of objects (up to 10) correctly at 2, and could recognise the symbols for the numbers too. I don't think it's expected though as HV was surprised when he did it without prompting at his two year old check.

My DS (2 .2 nearly) can count to 10 and recognise flashcard numbers and do the jigsaw where you put one with one teddy bear etc. but I agree it is just recognition - it's something he really enjoys so we do it a lot. Also, he has memorised a favourite book and says what is on the next page before you turn over (I don't think many people would understand it though - we do 'cos we've read the bloody thing about 2 million times). He does seem to have a memory for stuff like that. So saying there was some other things on the 2 year assesment (dressing a teddy, toilet training etc) that he shows no interest at all in. I think it's a case of thm doing best what they enjoy

My ds could count at 2 didn't put much effort into how high he just started to count.Dd now 3 counts to ten in three other languages as well as counting to 20 with odd help when she forgets numbers in english(she seems to prefer other languages).Children learn diff things at diff age.Depends on what they want to remember/learn.
