Anyone else counting down towards a January start in reception?

I'm excited and sad and apprehensive, DS is looking forward to it...the reception teacher will make a home visit in the forst week of Jan, DS will start on Jan 12th, mornings only for the first week.

Good gentle induction, but a nightmare from the childcare pov.

Lots of things I don't seem to know.

Any other school-gate virgins? Shall we have a joint countdown?

My Ds2 is starting in Jan, but he's the only one starting!!
We're moving to Sussex on the 5th of jan and they only do one intake down there so it will just be little ole' ds2 starting one his own.

4.5 yrs.
I made some cakes for him to take into nursery today and he semms completely unphased by the whole thing.

It's his last day tomorrow, they're having a christmas party so he'll have some good memories.

I feel v sentimental about DS leaving his nursery. He's very very happy there, and will do his nativity play next week.
His best friend fom nursery is starting the same school, but won't start until a week later. I think that is going to phase him a bit.
Has your DS been able to visit his new school, as you're moving house?

BluStocking, I am also counting down. DS is starting at the school at the end of our road on 6 January. Half days for the first fortnight, then full-time. It seems like the loveliest place, and when the teacher made her home visit he liked her straightaway. So I am very happy with the idea of him going there. He has only been apart from me for 3 half-days a week with a childminder who has a nursery style set-up, where DS is the alpha male. He's a really gentle child who loves babies, dancing, and music and has no interest in football, guns or anything aggressive so am a bit anxious about how he'll get on with rougher kids.

Arabica - I am slightly apprehensive as to how DS will deal with being in a much larger group. he is used to being at nursery 4 days a week - but we had to pull him out of one nursery earlier this year because he didn't settle amongst the huge numbers of fighting kids. But school will be well structured - and the reception kids are in a separate bit of playground with the nursery children.
Pleased to hear he liked his teacher at the home visit.

DS has started to be very clingy with me, and told a friend of the family he was sad that he wouldn't be seeing the childminder any more. So I think he's a little apprehensive about what life will be like without her. So am I! Has your DS said anything and was he OK about leaving nursery?

DS1 is starting in January - at the same school the LTH's DS1 went to and her DS2 was going to go to .

I am more worried than he is. At his visit session, his teacher came up to me and said 'He is incredibly confident, isn't he?' Hopefully she meant it in a good way .

Luckily my neighbour's daughter already goes there and DS1's best friend from nursery will be starting at the same time so I should know some faces at the school gates.

Any updates? Anyone's little one started this week yet?
DS has started to tell me about times he has felt shy, and has said he will feel shy - but still says he is looking forward to it. It's beginning to hit home that he has left his nursery, where he was very happy.
I am in a panic about snack times and not having labelled his clothing, etc.
His teacher is coming for a home visit tomorrow.

DS has a teddy bears' picnic to meet his classmates on Friday afternoon, whilst we meet the head-teacher and other parentsschool starts Monday 9th. Friend's DD is starting tomorrowI can't believe how quickly time has flown by, I remember her when she was just a bump!

DD3 started in reception yesterday - she ran into school with barely a backward glance-long may it continue!!

She's my youngest child and for the first time I won't have any of my children at home.

I feel a bit wobbly about it but I am determined to appear confident in front of DS. He says he's looking forward to it, but at the same time says how much he misses his childminder and the rest of the kids who still go there.

dd starts reception next tuesday only 1pm till 3.30 but ill miss her x she is really excited about it bless her x

DS1 starts next Tuesday - 9am until 12pm.

Not as worried as I was. He seems fine about it, except that he is worried that his collection of Thomas engines will miss him when he is gone.

Nearly had a heart attack as was looking for grey school trousers, 4-5 years, for the best part of this week and could not find any .

That was until Mothercare came to the rescue...

He has everything....except socks, shoes, p-e shorts

I could've helped you there poshpaws, our local Woolies has them on sale for half price! Luckily, DS doesn't have to wear a school uniform so I don't have to get anything special. They haven't said anything about PE kit either, I expect we will find out tomorrow at the parents' meeting.

Lucky you re the uniform, Arabica.

Both of our Woolies (little one near me and big one in town) were decimated by the hungry hoardes looking for school uniform.

As I told my sister, I maybe a novice purchaser now, but I will soon cotton on to when and where to get the best bargains before they go

Well ds is fine- had a lovely day and told the teacher that he had got a full size pair of skis for xmas..... not true! ( On his pre school visits he told her a very detailed lie about the special device on his bedroom window!)

Icemum and robin - v pleased yours had a good start. Icemum, do you think it helps when a younger one has got used to older siblings making school part of their life?

DS's teacher came round yesterday - he likes her and seems very confident that she will solve all his problems. I am trying to talk to him about things that will happen, explaining the lunch system, etc, and all I am met with now is a long suffering 'oh MUM' look and "If I don't know anything, Becca will help me!".

A bit worried that he will find it v hard at first to last from breakfast to lunch without a snack - not allowed to take one in, they offer fruit freely 'usually bananas or carrot sticks' - which DS, Lola-style, absolutely will not never ever eat.

Good luck everyone else...let us know how it goes!

Blu, the older siblings were a great help, but what was more important to her is that she is now back with her two very best friends in the world(they had been split by different term start dates.)

Blu at least the fruit is bananas and the like - my dd was offered a tomato yesterday - her words 'and what was I supposed to do with that Mummy' - well it is a fruit I suppose!

DS went to his teddy bears' picnic today to meet the other new starters in his class and the one next door. When they sent the kids off to the playground with some older kids to learn some games, DS barely glanced back, and I got all emotional. It's not even his first day at school yet! I'm going to be weeping buckets on Monday.

LOL Lucycat - yes, tomatoes were mentioned as an occasional offering in the fruitbowl, and will meet with much the same response.
DS likes Satsumas, strawberries and fresh pineapple. I feel a bit sad that I can't send him in with a chunk of cheese or a little sandwich. They don't even get milk.

Glad the teddy Bear picninc went well, Arabica - the pain is all ours - if it goes well!

Well, we did it! Seemed remarkably untraumatic for DS so far. He just ran in & immediately saw all the interesting things set out for them to play with, and joined in as if he had been there for weeks. I felt like a spare part after 10 mins so left him to it. Gotta go and get him in 30min or so--but so far, so good!
