Edinburgh or East Lothian?

Hi. We are moving from Newbury to Edinburgh for DH's work. We have 3 primary school children (ages 5, 7 & 8). Has anybody got experience/recommendations of primary schools in Edinburgh itself, or out towards North Berwick? Also areas to live that aren't eye-wateringly expensive. Obviously the secondary school that they feed into is also important. I've been told that a high proportion of Edinburgh children go to private schools. Is this true, and is there a reason for this?! Thanks for any help, it's all a bit bewildering at the moment!

James Gillespies - Has both a high school and primary, both of which are highly regarded in the local area. It's also right on the meadows and close to town. Flats (not many houses) around there are also gorgeous but a bit pricey - I lived there 7 years ago in a two bed and it was lovely. Very safe etc and good for kids with the links.

In that area also Boroughmuir high school which is also good, however I prefer the ethos of Gillespies.

A bit further out Craigmount is also good. It's in Costorphine where you get a lot more for your money. It is a 20 minute bus ride into town but is convinient for the Gyle center. Some good primary schools in the area

I agree that there are a fair few private schools in Edinburgh but no more so than any other major city. Also as there is no state grammar system in Scotland the state high schools have a wider mix of pupils.

Hope that helped.

P.S if you look a bit further back there will be a few more threads on schools in Edinburgh

A huge porportion of Edinburgh children go to private schools, think its about a quarter so much more than most large cities. The reasons for this are mixed. There is a good range of private schools many of which are not as expensive as they are in other areas. The state schools are really good so its not a reflection on them.

Have got my DD in private school but can't really afford it so would love to get a flat on the meadows so she can possibly go to Gillespies or Boroughmuir, so if I was looking for a flat what area would I look for, or what street?
