DS2 has just brought home his spelling book. His spellings are in for next term and they include: displeasure, unavoidable, disappear and character.
Does anyone else think they are quite difficult for Y2?

Ludicrously so, unless he can spell because, friend, cousin, necessary and a hundred other such words.

MerryKidMas · 12/12/2005 19:59

Those words are more like the Year 4 spellings at our school. DD is in Year 2 and her spellings this week were things like 'moon, mood, root, rook, rule' etc

TheFish · 12/12/2005 20:00

yes ds3=1 ( &) att eh moemnt has thigns like: "liking" "chatting" ( all those words that change according to if theya re the present participle or not)

TheFish · 12/12/2005 20:01

sorry ds1 ( 7)

KBearthePolarBear · 12/12/2005 20:03

saffy - blimey they are difficult words. My DD is in YR2 and words she has brought home recently are

broke, slope, telephone, close, joke, spoke, drove, tomato, potato, float, boat, goat

(have the list right here, don't have photographic memory!).

Glad it's not just me This weeks spellings include frankincense, Bethlehem and Nazareth.
I spend ages with him going over them and he does manage the test but I'm sure if I asked him the week later he wouldn't be able to do them. Last year he was still getting words like but put and ball so seems such a huge jump.

Ds1 is Yr2 and his spelling vary from week to week.
Sometimes it's things like home, over, nose, our but then other weeks he has stuff like multiply, orange, health, sailing.

His spelling test this week is to learn all the words since half term.
There are 72 of them!!

festiveface · 12/12/2005 20:31

ds2 is in year 2, he is struggling with spellings and this week they have been COLD BOLD ARM HARM ARE THESE and some more, can't remember now but dedo not had any that hard, he wouldn't even be able to read them let alone spell them!

homemama · 13/12/2005 10:32

Saffy, these sound like very able Y3 spellings. They do prefixes in Y3 and words with prefixes are in the green literacy strategy spelling guide for Y3. IMO, they're best towards the end and for the more able as they are tricky.

Surely words with prefixes are easiest spelt when you understand what a prefix is and can therefore learn the root word for aid?

LIZS · 13/12/2005 10:55

ds is in year 3 and still doing crowd, clown, now etc so yes those seem pretty hard to me !

singersgirl · 13/12/2005 14:46

As Homemama says, those are the sort of things my (relatively good at spelling) DS1 has been getting this term in Y3. This week we had unusual plurals - phenomenon/phenomena, formula/formulae etc - and have previously had 'unhygienic' and 'unconscious' etc.

mandieb · 13/12/2005 21:44

Obviously he is in the high group for spelling .The teacher must think he is up to it .
