Depends on the school! SATs levels aren't sublevelled by the government, schools just receive the threshold boundaries and the raw score. Some schools then simply divide the point required into three to sublevel-which is fine as long as the grade boundaries divide equally by three! When they don't, the exact split can vary as each school can decide how to split the score. When I do it, I make the "c" the largest of the bands, even if by only one mark, and "a" the smallest.
So for example this year I divided level 5 into
Writing 5c 36-40 5b 41-45 5a 46-50
Reading 5c 34-39 5b 40-45 5a 46-50
Maths 5c 70-80 5b 81-90 5a 91-100

Thank you very much for your helpful reply.

I have suddenly got a very motivated child after many years of apathy!

Thanks again.
