Martianbishop - HELP! The egg experiment didn't work!

OK, I finally managed to steal a milk bottle and try the experiment with the egg, but it didn't work. The paper went out almost immediately - lack of oxygen I presume. It smouldered for a bit, and the egg did begin to go into the bottle a bit, but then it stopped.

So - any hints to make it work? (I need to buy more eggs tomorrow!) How much paper should I use? What sort of paper? How long should it take?

Very soft boil the egg so that it only just holds its shape. we use a twist of about 6 inches of paper

We do it with news paper.

I was so disappointed, as dh was extremely sceptical ... then it didn't work

He also had the nerve to complain because I managed to fill the living room with smoke! (It was too cold to go outside!)

Honestly, honestly honestly it does work!

You need to put the paper in and the egg on top pdq, it takes a bit of practice

That egg looks quite small for the size of bottle neck. I think I'll get some extra small eggs from Tescos too

You ask the lab techs, very nicely

you can cut it up with a long knife or if you want another experiment try

'How to remove the egg from the bottle

1. Make sure you're standing outside or somewhere where it's ok to make a mess - there is a very good chance that this experiment will result in small peices of egg going everywhere.

2. Apply a little more margarine to the rim of the bottle - being sure to grease the inside surface well.

3. Hold the bottle over your head with the mouth pointed downwards. Shake the bottle gently untill the egg is seated in the mouth, sealing the opening. Some shapes of bottles might not be suitable for this.

4. Tilt your head back and blow sharply at the egg through the mouth of the bottle.

5. If you are lucky, rather than being pushed in by the air you blow at it, the egg should slide right out - be ready to catch it!'
