WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 21:54

they got to mid 20's old in those books didnt they? Clover def. had men sniffing around

Feenie · 14/07/2011 21:54

I thought it was her back? Don't remember the canary Confused. I loved those books too, and the Little Women series - am rereading Little Men atm.

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 21:57

yes, her back...becasue she was disobedient and went too high on the swing...

OMG anyone ever read Joanie - she prayed to god because she was bored...then dived into the shallows in the sea and broke her neck, and had to face life as a quadraplegic.

HumphreyCobbler · 14/07/2011 22:14

It was Cousin Helen who had the canary.

Malcontentinthemiddle · 14/07/2011 22:15

Cousin Helen had a canary??

HumphreyCobbler · 14/07/2011 22:20

yes, it was jealous of her pencil

HumphreyCobbler · 14/07/2011 22:21

am laughing at my last post now, sounds so insane.

In What Katy Did At School, Cousin Helen writes a letter to Katy in which she describes her new pet canary.

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:23

yowzer..........cousin Helen the 'well behaved' paraplegic
vs
Katy the frustrated rebel paraplegic

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:25

I remember Helen sorrowfully telling Katy she 'had her dark days too'

HumphreyCobbler · 14/07/2011 22:32

Katy became well behaved too, remember, she had a talk with Helen and things started to look up and she brushed her hair and wore a pretty frock. Her reward was that she got better.

I wish a doctor could come on and tell us what she had wrong with her and how it magically got better three years down the line.

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:36

think she did break her back and luckily it healed, she went downstairs for christmas morning didnt she? surprising her parents?

HumphreyCobbler · 14/07/2011 22:39

no, she went downstairs on her mother's (deceased) birthday to find the aforementioned Cousin Helen there as a surprise.

Seriously, why do I know this????????

Do I have so little to think about I remember sad plot details of childrens books?

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:40

what!! it wasn't christmas morning bells ringing snow etc??? poor Dr Carr

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:41

am laughing that I remember it wrong so clearly...

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:42

cousin Helen never walked again though?

reminds me of the secret garden
skipping to get stronger
if you're told you're ill, you will be ill...Colin

and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:43

oh my good lord may have to amazon the whole set. *for dd...

HumphreyCobbler · 14/07/2011 22:46

do it, you will love it

although Katy falling in love was not really so convincing to me

and as an adult I find it hilarious that he only fell in love when he saw her nursing his sick niece

RustyBear · 14/07/2011 22:53

Have you read the sequels to the Katy series? Clover and In the High Valley? After Katy gets married, Clover goes out to Colorado with Phil (who needs mountain air after having pneumonia) and meets her cousin Clarence Page who lives on a ranch out there. They are both available free from the Gutenberg project website.

thetasigmamum · 14/07/2011 23:12

She didn't break her back. She bruised her spine, and I think there was some kind of inflammation issue too...... They always said she had hope of walking again and her condition was completely different from Helen's. Of course she was much younger than Helen and in the beginning she was very sick, too (she hit her head also I think) n

thetasigmamum · 14/07/2011 23:13

I can actually see the book from where I'm sitting but I'm too lazy to get up and get it off the shelf.

LawrieMarlow · 14/07/2011 23:52

I'm sure Katy went downstairs on 8th September (which would have been her mother's birthday). 8th September also being my birthday and so I remember it :)

I have got the other Katy books on my kindle but haven't read them yet.

HumphreyCobbler · 15/07/2011 07:57

There are more sequels ????? How did I not know this???? I need to read these.

thanks for the info thetasigmamum.

pointissima · 15/07/2011 08:59

jeee Yes! My husband bought that for me too: I had never been able to find a copy as a child and had spent more than three decades wondering What Happened Next!

Malcontentinthemiddle · 15/07/2011 09:16

I only ever read Next and At School.... I do remember that Johnnie's awful stay with the well-meaning aunt used to ring very true. ('there's another chicken, Johnnie, go chase it....')

LawrieMarlow · 15/07/2011 09:26

If you have a kindle (or if you don't) here is Clover and here is In the High Valley.

There seem to be various other (free) Susan Coolidge books there as well.
