Year 6 teachers - anyone else horrified by Writing Sats results?

The thresholds come out tomorrow, I know, but we got our papers back last week - on intial inspection, if the thresholds are similar to last year, we have only 4 level 5s (and were expecting 20+). Virtually every child has scored much lower than we predicted/have assessed them at. STACKS of input into writing over the last 3 years - 1 to 1 tuition, ingtevention groups, you name it we've done it. We're gutted. Anyone else experienced similar?

Back at work today and apparently our results were pretty crap much as expected. This year we have a bulge at the top end and a bulge at the lower end, and the results refect that also. No surprises.
Writing results OK, if that answers the OP.

We've been moderating writing (across the school not just Y6) and looked at 3 pieces of SAT writing that had been levelled as 5s. The piece with the highest mark was the piece we considered to be the worst (rambling and a bit boring). I can only assume the extra marks were for the extra unnecessary waffle.

Hello OP here! Very glad we've got back to the point, which was "has anyone else found they have less lev 5s than they expected?" Not sure what all the waffling about 'volatility' was for - but we're still disappointed with ours, and I feel v sorry for those kids that have produced writing of a really high calibre all year. But, as someone else pointed out SUCCINCTLY, it shows how meaningless SATs are, as if we didn't know. Sad

BBC News has picked up this. Apparently there have been lots of complaints

There have been press stories on this every year for around 5 years (I was in a TES double page spread once looking cross Grin).

This must surely be the last year we have to put up with this nonsense!

mrz · 06/07/2011 20:44

I just wonder what nonsense will follow though Hmm

Feenie · 06/07/2011 20:48

What, you mean Lord Whatshisface's recommendations, or something worse? Confused

My Yr 6 child is an avid reader, writes news stories in free time and has spent the past 7 years in top set for all subjects. Passed with top marks in this year's grammar tests. SATs results: Reading 5; Maths 5; Writing- low 4 (!).
