Reading - GINN books

opinions please, DS is in year 1 and is on the GINN reading programme - my sister who works as a classroom assistant tells me that his school isn't pushing his reading as her DD is on another series and her school gave up GINN a few years ago.

He seems to like the books and is reading them, although he has difficulty with words not spelt phonetically.

he has come home with words to learn to spell this term, although he's not going to be tested on them - examples are: because, another, pen, ben etc etc - my sister says that some of these are too hard for his age

he's my eldest and I've no experience of teaching someone to read so would appreciate your views

Are these the books the ones with Rosie, Mo and Sam in them ? My DS is in reception & has started bringing these home 'Rosie wanted the bubbe' seemed quite difficult to expect him to read.

Is it Ginn 360 ? If so ds' school uses it. Didn't think it was published that long ago but there are lots of different series by Ginn over the years - I bought a load of Literacy Ladders books cheaply when a book store closed down which were published in the 1990's. Different schools use different publishers, and some use a mixture.
