DS sick in school today

My DS came home from school today and told me he didn't eat his pack lunch because he was sick. I asked if he was actually sick and where and was told in his lunch box. I asked if he told anyone and he said the canteen lady and she just told him not to eat his lunch.

I have just had to clean the lunch box, sick and all. Would you have expected someone to clean it up for your child?

Not if he shut it up in his lunch box and forgot about it!

Generally speaking, yes, but I wonder if the canteen lad got the wrong end of the stick or misunderstood what your DS said to her about having been sick - she may not have realised ot was in his lunchbox and I'm guessing that he didn't tell anyone else (eg his teacher) or he would have been sent home.

I wouldn't expect someone to clean up the sick, but I would have expected to be told that my child had been sick. Actually, if my kid had thrown up, I would expect to be called to the school at lunchtime to come take him home, if he was that unwell.

Possibly didn't explain himself, only 5, very well.

He has asthma and has been coughing a lot so I think it was more being sick because of coughing too much.

We have a parents evening tonight and wondered if it was worth mentioning.

Yes I would! Poor kid got no lunch today.

Would have definitely expected someone to mention it to me, though possibly only at the end of the school day if ds had been up for the afternoon bit.

Schools are forever cleaning up after a child has been sick. Most schools keep two buckets of sawdust ready to pour over it. I'm sure if the lunchtime lady had understood it would have been cleaned up and he would have been given a school dinner. Sounds like she thought he said he felt sick. No harm in mentioning it, but I'm sure it was a misunderstanding.

Mentioned it to his teacher tonight at parents night and she said they are really short staffed at the moment and there are no auxilaries to help in canteen. She did say she would speak to DS and let him know that he can always go to her as he knows where she has lunch. She was very understanding.

As someone who works in school I can assure you if we hear a child has been unwell at dinnertime they are sent straight home -no 2 ways about it.So if there are no auxiliries who supervises i would find that very worrying.

I work in a school and if a child is sick, their parents are called to come and collect them. If they are sick on themselves or on the floor then it will be cleaned up. If they were to be sick in a lunch box/bag, then I guess it would be put in a platic bag for the parents to take home and clean.

Hope he is feeling better, make sure he knows to tell someone that he has been sick if it happens again. Quite worrying that nobody noticed a child being sick, would they have noticed if a child was choking on their food?

Your poor DS Shazzler. I hope he's OK again soon. Just before half-term two separate children were sick on my DD's shoes on the same day (I know, I know... I don't know how she managed to get in the way twice - I think that she is one of life's natural carers, and as soon as someone said they felt sick she ran over to look after them... either that or she's massively unlucky!). Anyway, the teacher/TA cleaned her shoes for her ... twice. If they cleaned my DD's shoes, you can bet they also cleaned up after the poor kids who were sick. I think it's highly likely that, in your case, the dinner lady got the wrong end of the stick, but even so I think that dinner supervision could do with improvement.

My brother was regularly sick on his food at school, and his lunchbox was always at least rinsed.
