I wish DD would do some work in school!

She tends to sit and daydream or watch what others are doing rather than actually do any work herself. It really drives me mad. She is capable of doing the work, okay she's not top of the class but I know she understands what she has to do but just doesn't do it.

One good thing is she isn't naughty in school so while she isn't working she isn't distracting others.

I've started giving her the omega fish oil hoping we will see some improvement but its still early days.

Someone tell me all 6 year olds are like this!

Wish my 10 year old would do some work too - fed up of fighting with him over homework (well spellings)!

Sounds pretty normal for a lot of 6 year olds to me!

My DD10 has been referred to as the "worst day dreamer that I have ever taught!"

I find it hard as I work in DD's class and I just feel like I'm always going on at her. If I avoid her during class, she doesn't do her work. If I sit with her, she still doesn't do her work and I just get annoyed which is unfair on her.

kid, is there some way you could not work in dd's class? It is possible she might behave differently if you weren't there. I only say this because my mother taught me for a while, and I hated it and behaved very bady (granted this was in secondary school, and I'm not sure how old your dd is).

DD is 6 and I have to work in her class (I work mainly 1:1 with another child. She has was the same with her work last year when I wasn't working in her class too.
I don't intend to work in her class every year, maybe just this year and next but that could easily change.

I get the impression from other threads about parents working in kids schools that the issues I was talking about are much more about secondary school age. Does your dd get OK reports from her teacher? I must say I don't think I would like to watch either ds or dd in their classrooms, I'm sure they both frequently behave badly!

Her behaviour is very good, she very rarely (if ever) gets told off. She is confident to put her hand up and answer questions, its just getting her to put it down on paper!

DS on the other hand, I'm glad I'm not in his class, its hard enough being in the same school as him! But, so far he has been very good. Well apart from the time he got in trouble for jumping off a table but he is only 3!

I'm sure the older they get, the harder they become. I'll just have to try and stay calm and stick to a reward system for when she does complete her work.

She sounds great kid! I was a terrible day dreamer as a child (not much different now, to be honest!) and ended up quite academically successful, so I'm not sure you should worry too much. Rewards sound a good way to go - how is she once she gets going on something?

lol, we use the phrase 'on another planet' too! Its not just DD, but obviously as her mum, I have to try and do something about it.

So far she has 5 stickers on her reward chart for completing her work. I've coloured in 10 spaces and when she gets 10, she can choose a treat. She has already told me she wants some more reading books from Oxfam, great as far as I'm concerned. I get a bargain and she does more reading

Are you sure you have your dd kid, and not mine?! She's 5.5 and concentration is nil, although I know she is capable. Have also just gone down the fish oil route in the hope that I might see a little benefit.

How long have you been using the fish oil? A child in DD's class is taking it and his mum recommends it. I'm willing to try anything to be honest, can't do any harm!

Less than a week - but I'm ever hopeful! I really worry about this, particularly as ds1 is a model pupil and I would never want her to feel like she was less able than him, even if she is slower to pick things up. I would never compare them against each other, but she's not stupid, and I would hate to see her hurting because of his natural ability iyswim.
