Very sad. I didn't agree with everything that he said, but he was always a terrific read and seemed like a realy genuine guy.

A very sad loss.

I interviewed him once or twice (in a former life!), and he really was a lovely man.

this is sad news. I always loved reading his acerbic and very perceptive pieces on the back page of the times ed. A really nice and intelligent person.

Very sad news, had read his column and so much he had written for so long I felt like I knew him.

I'll always remember using a very funny and acerbic quote of his in the first presentation I had to give during my PGCE in 1992 - raised a laugh immediately which relaxed me, and got me through a dreadful ordeal.

What a great loss
