University Dilema!

My DS has completed the USCAS application forms for 5 Universities. Three are to study Medical Physics and two for Physics. We have visited the Physics uni's and he really likes this course.

He visited one of the uni's who are offering Medical Physics and he has now decided the he would rather study pure physics.
The dilema we have is:-

  1. Is it poor etiquette to ask the uni's to change courses from Medical Physics to Physics.
  2. Does anyone actually think this would be possible or are we being a bit niave.
  3. If the Uni's aren't prepared to cahange his cours, then he is left with only 2 options. This wouldn't be a problem, but both have offered him a place one with min ABB, the other, which is our preferance out of the two, with a min AAA.
  4. If he puts his preferred choics down and doesn't acheive the AAA, what happens next?

Sorry if this is long, all this is very new and confusing for me. Any help or advise would be appreciated.

The only way to find out if the change is possible is to ask the university and not worry about the the etiquette (better to be on the course you want than spend 3 years miserable).

When your DS makes his final choices he would put the AAA university as his firm choice and the ABB one as his insurance choice. If he don't get AAA but still gets ABB or above he would automatically get a place at his insurance choice university.

My DS does Physics with astrophysics for his degree.

As webwiz says, best to talk directly to the unis but you'll find, I'm sure, that much of the Med Phys course is 'core' physics anyway.

And even on a pure physics course, he'll be able to add modules of medical physics as he goes along.

I'd be very surprised if in this case he couldnt transfer his application to 'pure' physics

hi, sorry it has taken so long for me to reply, the internet went down for a few hours.

Thanks for you advise. I will contact the uni's on monday and hope for the best.
