At the risk of getting PARPED...

...another thread just reminded me.

Y'know I'm all new to this playground banter. Today I've been really shocked at the responses to a letter we got about taking children out of school to go on holiday. It was fairly strongly worded and it did list just the very few circumstances in which it might be considered reasonable.

Most of the mothers were scoffing at it and I even heard comments such as 'they'll learn far more on holiday than in the last week of term' - almost pmsl as I've read that on here!! Basically all of the mothers in the conversation thought it was fine and said 'what would they do anyway, put me in prison?'

I kept my gob shut (for once).

I hate to put my foot in this argument and, as a teacher I was always against holidays during school time, but as a parent I feel a bit differently.

In my children's schools the last two weeks of term (before Christmas and summer especially) are always a complete wash out. Plus, when I once took my son out of school for a holiday (BIL's wedding in Australia and he only missed two or three days) I was astonished at how much he and his younger brother learnt about the whole experience. They had never been on a plane before let alone to another country and every day they learnt tons.

Sooooo, well, I won't say I am in favour, but I can understand the POV.

i'm taking my dd1 on holiday next week. she'll miss 6 days in total as we are away the 1st day back after half term.

Well I must be the only teacher that still teaches in the last week of term then

we're off tomorrow for a week in yorkshire,. back nxt sat, four generations going! I personally think its not detrimental if u don't take the p**s. DS1 is 6 and DS2 is 3, both in f/time education and both schools fine about it!
