Can some one explain transformations to me please?
DS1 has been set some homework today and it has to be handed in tomorrow or else he will be given extra homework for the weekend! The teacher handed it to them and said "lets see how you deal with this". DS1 hasnt a clue as he said they havent covered this subject at all before!!!!

He has a sheet and it asks some questions....

Translate shape A by translation vector (-6/1) and label image A1.
Reflect the A1 in the axis
Rotate A2 90 degrees anti-clockwise about the origin, label shape A3
Reflect A3 in the line y=-2
Reflect shape B in the line x =2
Reflect shape B in the X axis
Rotate shape B2 90 degrees anti-clockwise about point 4,2
Translate B3 translation vector (-5/2)

What the heck does all that mean?????
What is a translation vector?
Does anyone know any good maths homework sites for Year 7 pupils???
Please!

So to reflect this image in the x axis we would flip the image and locate it in exactly the same position but in the quadrant below??? So all the co-ordinates then become negatives????

Oh bloodyhellfire that this is what I have to look forward to !

katymac · 13/10/2005 18:33

Definatley - you're getting the hang of this

Rotate 90 a/c puts it into the bottem right (but be careful about it's orientation)

katymac · 13/10/2005 18:36

BTW was wrong in forst post x =horizontal, y = verticle (but you worked it our already)

It's years since I did this

Jayzmummy · 13/10/2005 18:41

DONE IT!!!!!!

Thanks for your help. DS says a HUGE thanks to.
Not very happy that no prep was given before this homework was set....things are sure different when they head off to secondary school!

The maths master is horrid and gives them all a really hard time..he's a little man who drives a sports car...says it all really

I hope that mumsnet is still going in 7 years time when ds starts secondary school- ill need all the help i can get with this maths malarky!

aloha · 13/10/2005 19:09

This is RIDICULOUS! There are really clever, mathematically minded people here all struggling and puzzling over homework intended for 11 year olds. It's MAD.
I still don't understand any of it.

katymac · 13/10/2005 19:11

I'm really pleased I remember so much..I wanted to be a maths teacher once

Lonelymum · 13/10/2005 20:11

Jayzmummy can you let us know what mark ds gets for this homework? So we can bask in reflected glory?!

Jayzmummy · 14/10/2005 09:27

I sure will....he will get his mark today.
DS went to ask a friend of ours (who was a sceience teacher) if he could check it was right.....he didnt have a clue!!!!
His 15 year old son checked it over and said it was right....maths has really changed since my day....we had trigonmetry and I never understood the purpose of it....they dont do that now apparently????
Ive packed DS off to school and told him he must not tell anyone that MNetters helped him with his homework!!!!
Will report back later
