school subjects

Hello everyone out there can anyone tell me if citizenship is a core subject . How many gcse would this subject give them . The school my son is at has just started this subject in year 11 and they tell the sudents its worth half a gcse is the right ,if any one has any information on this that would be good thanks michelle.

Well, maybe citizenship is so important that the GCSE count doesn't matter. Instead you could find out what difference this will make to your sons experience and development. It would be good if he was learning about his rights and responsibilities, his role in a democratic society, how to have a say in the country in which he lives and so much more. Qualifications are not the only thing to think about. Hope that didn't sound too preachy!

My Yr 11 just covers this in the PHSE classes - no qualifications but they all take 11 GSCSE's so no worry either.

I know schools where they just cover this in form time. Also aspects of it (and PSHE) should be covered in all subjects. So history should do something about how the country and laws formed, Science do endless amounts on global warming and pollution, maybe to posters related to world or local problems in art etc.
