Right people here's one to get you started.... I was in the local branch of my bank, a very large well known bank. I needed to withdraw a small sum of money in various amounts of currency, well £42 to be exact and the young man behind the glass wrote down the figures that I had given him and then he proceeded to take out a calculator to add up the amounts to make sure that they came to £42!! One figure was £10 made up of two £5 notes so there was very little maths involved - WHY COULDN'T THIS YOUNG MAN USE HIS BRAIN!!! Why do they have to reach for calculators, have their brains stopped or am I just getting too old?......my brain still works, I think!.....

It's why 'mental maths' has been added as a 'must have' towards SATS etc.

Maybe he has been instructed to check every figure with a calculator. It is very simple maths I agree and a bit frustrating to watch but just because he may have difficulty with numbers, it shouldn't prevent him necessarily from being a bank clerk.

I'm not sure this is such a new thing, I remember when I was a teen in the 70s coming across shop assistants who'd blithely try to charge more than £5 for 4 items costing less than a quid apiece. Some people just have no feel for numbers.

working in a bank I'm not surprised he checked everything!

I expect he has been instructed to check everything. Also, he would regularly be dealing with much larger withdrawals where using a calculator would be more appropriate and maybe he is not keen to keep switching from calculator to non-calculator mode.
