Not focusing - but academically able!

My son of 8 (year 4) is not focusing in class. The children at present are split into groups according to academic level. The group he was originally put into was not challenging him, so, after some persuading, the school moved him up a group for a trial period.

He is now going to be put down a group as he is still not concentrating. Have I got any rights to get him help so he can stay in the higher group ??

Is it possible he has ADD - predominantly inattentive?

You should definitely talk to the SENCO if you think he needs extra support in class.

my son is like that
he just loves chatting
in the end I gave up in earlier years and let him be where school was putting him

last year he was sitting his 11+ exams, we done work with him, he matured too and now problem of not being able to concentrate is gone as he had got there himself

I your son is able - I wouldn't worry too much, jut encourage him to explore stuff - whathever would interest him
my son read all horrible history books in year 4, he had excellent history teacher then

problem starts in y5 when they really know they are able but are still in lower ability group
it somehow dents their self esteem
what are your son's favourite subjects?

Thanks for your comments. Meeting with the school this week again. Just can't bear for him to go in a lower group again. So worried that the divide between bottom and top with be too much too make up. I will just have to keep trying at home with him and maybe, just maybe, he might mature.

don't worry too much
always good to work at home with those who chat too much, but don't criticise him for him being who he is
