Harvest festival

I'm new to this - when you take in your donations (tins, jam etc) do you just take them in a carrier bag or do you put them in a box with cling film over so it's more like a hamper?

We take one or two items per child and they make up the hampers in school.

At my son school we have to "present" everything in a box. To be honest It's a nightmare

Hmmm- saw a boy today taking his in a box with clingfilm over (he was a week early though - it's next Friday ) and it just got me wondering what was the 'done thing' - s'pose it will differ from school to school so probably a bit of daft question

Don't they send a note home with instructions? Ironic really that for "harvest" festival you have to take non-perishable goods. No hampers of fresh produce to be seen!

it varies GDG - at my childrens last school children brought in individual items and the PTA made the hampers up at school. At my ds's new school, one has to select various items and create ones own hamper

Not a daft question at all,you just want to get it right I can understand that.I've had to send my son to a private school and the first year he was there I assumed you would just send in a contribution like I did when I was at school.How wrong could I be !! Some of the so called boxes would have put a Harrods hamper to shame. I wish I'd could have asked someone before hand.

Kbear - I know what you mean, I always feel it should have fruit and veg in it!

What IS Harvest Festival?

I forgot! It was today and I forgot!!! They only sent a note home yesterday and I read it on route to swimming club.. and never thought about it again! Bad Mother Alert!

Still have DD's and DS1's to go.. will make up for my oversight with theirs.. Ds2's caught me unawares.. it's a bit early innit!!

As all the old people compare boxes it works much better if the school makes them up. They get shoe boxes from our local shopping outlet centre. Tinned grapefruit is no good with some medication, also alcohol. We're in a very rural area so lots of fresh stuff. My favourite - a girl brought in organic raspberries as her only donation with a note to say they had to go to her great grandmother!!

Harvest Festival is originally a pagan festival, thanking the gods for the fruits of the year..... (I think!!...) Like an offering.

Last year our school sent a flower posy to the local elderly. This year they are just collecting for Feed the Children.

Used to get tins, and had to spend ages weeding out out of date things etc!
