Not sure if I want to read any more education threads...

... even though I've started so many myself recently. There seem to be all these reception class children who have done lots of letters, read independently, can write numbers and/or letters....

Dd does nothing yet, hasn't brought any books home, is only just starting with jolly phonics, can certainly not read, just recognizes a few letters, cannot write...

Is that really so unusual?

oh emkana, dd says "there's no work at school, mummy, it's just playing" bless her.
She was 4 in June and there's plenty of time to learn all that stuff. All she can write or read is her name. Her colouring's fab tho which is a great sign imho.
I'd be surprised if I see a raeading book before half term tbh and that's fine.
Don't believe all the stories of every child reading etc, they are like those ones you used to hear at yr post-natal group that every child but yours was sleeping through at 5 wks lol.

My DS could read the whole alphabet before he was 2, upper and lower case, and all numbers upto 20, he also knew several colours and shapes, yes this is very very early, he was very keen to learn, but all the children i knew the same soon caught up when they started pre-school and they are now on an even par.

In Scotland they would all still be at Nursery so on the positive side by the end of the year they will be miles ahead of your average Scottish kid .

Don't worry they all do it when they are ready.

They all develop at different rates, she will learn lots through play - don't worry about it, if she's in reception she can't have been in school for many weeks, they need to let them settle in to school life first

Sorry, I just meant everyone else caught up with him and DS slowed down. My DS is suspected of having mild Autism, and autism children are often bright in certain areas.

You will be amazed how quickly your DD learns now she is in reception, I bet she takes you by surprise.

My DS2 is 22m and he likes me to say the numbers of the rooms as we go up the stairs and he's starting to copy me and recognises numbers in books etc.. the only trouble is that we have 13 bedrooms and obviously we can't have a room 13 so we have a 2A - therefore Tom says 1,2,2a,3,4.....

Dd was four in May.

Guys, please don't turn this into a thread where you tell me the amazing things your child could do at 18 months....

At 18 months DD1 could - poo her nappy, walk (but not run), screech, point & screech and whine. That I think is about it! .

I'm with Gomez, we are in Scotland too and DS1 didn't start School until 5.5 years. He could write and recognise his name then and that was all.

my ds can't read either and he's the same age as bossykates, in fact it hasn't been attempted yet, lets face it by the time they are 10 they will rpobably all be able to read and write and the ones who have flair may not necessarily be the ones who did it first.

ok on the other hand my DS
was not potty trained till he was 3.6 yrs
still wears a nappy at night
Still drinks from a bottle at night
has delayed speech
Cant dress himself fully
he is 4.8yrs

All children are different, please dont worry, you will start a post in 6 months bragging about what your DD has learned

Waterfalls - it would be an amazing house! But at the moment it's a B&B, actually it's a 'licensed Hotel'

I don't worry about my childrens development - they are healthy and happy that's the main thing especially at such a young age!

My ds is 4.2yrs. He can read his own name & make a scrawling attempt at writing it. That'll do for me for now. He has brought reading books home from school - but thats for us to read to him.

In DS1's Reception Class of 20 children only 2 could read at all when they started - DS1 certainly couldn't. It is amazing to see how they all progress, and by y3 almost all of them are reading fluently.
Don't know about DS2's class coz he tells me all they do is play. He is very good at playing and does some mean light sabre moves .
I've posted on too many education threads and must go to bed.....

If you lived here she would still be at kindergarten doing lots of painting and drawing and running around and making things. There would be no teaching or learning anything at all ... She wouldn't be starting school till her 5th birthday next May ...

Remind me ... aren't you from Germany? If you were at home she would also still be playing at kindergarten wouldn't she?

She has plenty of time to learn things ... she will be reading and writing before you know it ...
Trust me, I'm a teacher ... well, an ex-teacher of older kids anyway!
