11+ exams in different regions

We are US citizens, I was told that when it comes time for my son to take the 11+ exam he will sit with a school in the UK. However, I know the regions have different tests. Do they vary greatly? I don't want to spend too much time on something that will not appear on a certain regions' test. Does anyone have information on the exams of different regions?

Choi - we need more information to help you...

Are you taking about State-funded grammar schools, or about the 11+ entrance exams for an independent (private) school?

Do you live in the U.K. The exam your son sits will depend which school he applies to.
Different schools have different types of exam, however most have some combination of

  • Maths
  • English (Comprehension/ composition)
  • Reasoning (Verbal/ Non-verbal)

It's worth contacting schools for examples of past papers. Various companies (e.g. Bond, Athey..) also sell sample practice papers.

See www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/11plus/

and scroll down to the bottom for the area-by-area guide.

Very full info - use the search facility to search for a particular school or schools you're interested in.

Or go to the open days and pick up past past papers/sample papers.
