Phonics year 2 reading not progressing

E started well with phonics in Reception and year 1, but now in year 2 her reading seems not to be progressing. I've found games online that cover the early phonics but nothing for this stage. I would really appreciate any feedback or advice if you've been through or are going through this stage, or any recommendations for websites with games or books we can work through at home. Thanks.

Not sure about recommendations but I found doing 15 mins a day reading helped my little one.

Thanks for your reply skybluepearl, we'll keep up the reading. Lovecheese - She's doing "set 1 and 2 sounds" : stretchy consonants e.g ff, ll, ve, nk and stretchy vowel sounds e.g igh, ow, air.

djesand, children do not follow nice, neat curves when it comes to learning, they fit and start, sometimes plateau, and this sounds like what is happening with your DD at present. But keep on reading, with her and to her. My DD was on the same book band for what seemed like ages at one point last year, and when I queried this with her teacher she explained that as they become more confident and competent readers their "Skill-set" needs to keep pace ie good comprehension, empathy, expression, summarising the text etc. My advice is just to keep on, let her read what she wants at home and try not to "Steer" her towards harder texts, keep asking questions, read TO her so that she will hopefully pick up how you as a competent adult read and don't let any anxiety show. Hope this helps, she will progress, honest.

Have just discovered completely by chance some books I bought at the charity shop - Read Write Inc, which is the system they are following at school (have just this week changed to this system)!

What system did they follow before? Most schools use Jolly phonics, so I believe.

djesand - if they've just started read, write, inc, then provided they have good teachers she should make good progress this year.

Read, write, inc divides kids into small groups for an hour long phonics lesson (if they are not doing this, then they are not following RWI) - which means it's very likely your child is not going to be taught by her class teacher, but instead by a TA.

If she is having an hour phonics lessson with an adult you trust, then I wouldn't worry. They will be doing as good a job as anwyone.

If, however, this is not happening, or you're not 100% confident about the teaching abilities of the adult who is teaching the phonics group, then I recommend dancing bears. It's a program you do 10 mins a day at home, and it's totally compatible with RWI.

Also get her eyes tested....

Thanks everyone, I really do appreciate your great advice and tips. We were on Jolly Phonics before but the whole school has changed, starting this last week, to Read, Write Inc. I have shown anxiety, I have to admit to going through my own pushy mummy phase - need to snap out of it! She's doing fine really and comfortable at her level, it's very reassuring to hear from you all with your experiences, thanks again.
