The school where I have been volunteering are going to take me on as a graduate teacher next year after I have got some experience working with Yr 1/2 as well as reception. This is a dream come true for me but would love some info /tips from those who have been there before.

A friend is doing this on a part-time basis. She's doing 4 days a week, so it will take 4 terms instead of 3.

How did you find it? Was it like being thrown in the deep end? How were you assessed? Thanks for answering btw

No, I didn't feel thrown in at the deep end at all. You can pretty much take it as fast or as slow as you like. I was pretty full on straight away, but I felt pretty confident and wanted to get on with it. I was observed at least once a week and this seemed to be the main form of assessing me. I had to provide folders full of paperwork with evidence of meeting each of the QTS standards. This is what most people seem to get worked up about but the files were not even read. Out of 4 full lever arch files I was only asked to show a few small sections. Nothing to worry about at all! And I think you have to be reeeeaaally bad to fail, and it wouldn't just happen at the end of the course, you'd have plenty of warning to pull your socks up if needs be. I've never heard of anyone failing. Have you been on the TES website? There's a GTP forum

Thanks schnapps I'll check out that website. I had been planning to do a SCITT but the head will back me for the GT as it means she can keep me in her school for the whole year (better for me in terms of child care as dds 1 and 2 go there). After half term I'm going to get experience in a Year 1/2 class and actually prepare and teach some lessons which will ease me in gently I hope. I've been doing reception for two terms and been given more and more responsibility - was told I have developed a good "teacher voice" on Friday
