I miss the school gate ... how sad am I?!

I'm always surprised on here by people who find the whole school gate experience unpleasant or stressful .. I love it! Or at least I used to.

We moved here when the boys were 3 and 5 and knew no-one. I really enjoyed the brief chatting, catching up, swapping news, getting to know people, sorting out party invitations ...

I now work 8.30 - 3.30 so don't get to the school gate at all now, and I miss it!

Awwww I love the school gate too. How old are your boys now?

roisin · 17/09/2005 10:07

They're 6 and 8 now.

My youngest has just gone up to secondary, roisin and I've surprised myself by missing it too. I suppose that's a reflection on my lack of a social life........

I detest school drop off and pick up, always have done.

Ulysees · 17/09/2005 10:13

We do allsorts of wheelin n dealin at the school gates, well....giving out marsy's lemon drizzle and school sweaters

Gobbledigook · 17/09/2005 10:16

I'm only 10 days into doing it and I have to say I detest it already. I've surprised myself as I'm an outgoing and sociable person normally but there is just something about this scenario that turns me off.

Yes, I miss the school run now my dds are at high school. It was so easy to talk to other mums and find out about things.

tatt · 17/09/2005 15:01

I'm not a great school gate fan but it was very useful to be able to check on what other parents thought. Now one of mine is at secondary I have to phone other parents/ make an effort to see them to talk over all the little things that worry you. So I'm not surprised you miss it.

Much to my amazement I am rather enjoying it. Am meeting Real People of sympathetic nature, and might actually have an off-line social life some time, you never know. Most bizarre, as I am one of life's lurk sullenly in the background girls.

RTKangaMummy · 17/09/2005 15:09

I hate it too, I am sooooooooooooo shy in RL

WigWamBam · 17/09/2005 15:50

I'm only 5 days into it, and I detest it too. It doesn't help that at the moment dd is only going for 2 hours in the afternoon, so no sooner have I walked out of the playground than I'm walking back into it! I'm very shy and don't have huge amounts of self-confidence, and I'm also old enough to be most of the other mum's mother, which doesn't help either!

I love it too. It's just nice going somewhere and seeing loads of friends in one place, all with something in common, and knowing that your children will be out in a minute.

Yes, I like it when there are plum stones mixed in with it too, usually with an ample covering of plum flesh.

JoolsToo · 17/09/2005 18:11

gg is under a lot of stress at the mo! (don't mention the house sale or work )

Give her a while and she'll be loving it too!
mind you it is a ball ache heaving kids in and out of carseats - I never had a car so I didn't have that problem!
