On a theme.... what's the difference between a sign and a symbol?

Ok, I know I should know and I have it written somewhere but I can't find it! Have a feeling a symbol represents something whilst a sign just is that thing. Am I right?

you're right dizzymama. I used to use the example of a sign to a town or city which is just the word and an arrow but the symbol of that town or city is like the logo of the council or whatever - it tells you a bit more about the thing it is symbolising (Year 7 RE )

That is brilliant Tommy, thank you, I'm only doing Year 3 RE but I think I can get that through to them... we could use the sign to the school and the school badge maybe....
