schools help please

ds1 has just gone into year 5. i am looking for where he may go for secondary school.
The nearby schools are quite poor and i really don't fancy any of them.

But, what are the chances of him geting into a school a few miles away?

the head of his current school recommended Bacup and rawtenstall grammar. The web says it is oversubscribed, what does that mean (bit thick!)

please can someone advise me?

If it is oversubscribed it means that there are more people applying for places than there are places. Ask the head if he can give you information on the catchment area for the last couple of years and that should give you an idea of his chances.
