Yes. You may feel more connected, your talents/skills may be needed, you will know more and be known more.

When do you need to decide by?

orinoco, go for it! I have been a parent governor at dds secondary school for 2 years now. There is loads of support and training. I would esp recommenend the new governors course( organized by the education authoritys governor services), you get to meet other new governors -ordinary people.
Governors are elected for 4 years so you might have to wait a while for the next vacancy.
I feel I have a real knowledge of my dds school and i know what the school is doing and why.Dont expect to make lots of decisions about the school though -thats the heads job.

SChools so need supportive Governors. If you are the only one who stands its yours, if not it will be an election. Go and express an interest to the Head and see if he lets on if there are others interested. Also schools can co-opt people onto a Gb which is a useful of getting a range of people with varied skills. Go for it.

3 meetings a year minimum at times which clash horribly with bedtime so if sitters are a problem hold fire..

I would hold off a bit - get involved in other ways till you know a bit more about how it all works etc.

I have avoided the PTA this year for that reason but am "Class Rep" for DS's class - just about to organise a coffee afternoon for the parents and the teacher for an informal chat. Theh if I feel a bit more confident next year I'll do a bit more.

What did you decide orinoco?
