Hi,I am fairly new to the area and have a little boy who will be 3 in Jan. I don't know many people as yet and have no idea where to start looking for the best primary school...any ideas please?! (We live near lower sydenham train station)

If you go to the ofsted website, near the bottom of the page is a place to put in your postcode. This will bring up your nearest primary schools, and you can take it from there.

There is a MNer that is a teacher in Lewisham and she may have some inside info. It is also a good idea to see where the children on your road go to school. Get chatting to the parents and sound them out.

There are at least two Lewisham teachers on MN but I'm afraid I know very little about schools in that part of Lewisham.

I'd recommend that you work out which schools you are closest to and use the Lewisham Primary Schools Admissions booklet (2011/12) to get an idea of which schools you are likely to get in to based upon your address. Once you know which schools you're interested in arrange to visit them and hang around at lunchtime/end of the day to see what's going on. If you go along to a local playgroup lots of the parents will be more than happy to offer their advice as to the 'best' schools... take it with a pinch of salt though; a lot of people believe 'best' = 'highest KS2 results'.

Hello, I'm new here. My two are virtually finished with education but went to Gordonbrock Primary School, which we were very happy with. I would say you definitely need to visit and have a chat with the head for all the schools you are interested in. However, first of all, look at the admissions policy and ring the admissions team to find out where you are likely to get a place. I think they will tell you over the phone based on last year's admissions and your address/circumstances. There is no point in wasting time applying to schools where you definitely won't get a place! And for most of Lewisham you will have to live pretty near the school to get a firstborn in, unless you are looking for a place in a church school. Good luck!
