Doesn't want to go into Year 1 because he doesn't want to do "work"

Any ideas what I can do?

Went to school willingly this morning, but was a little horror on the way home, has been saying since the last month of Reception that says he doesn't want to be there, wants to do Reception again. Complains about so-n-so who can write faster than him; if he can't be best in the class, he can't be bothered. I fear it will become a daily thing of having to drag him into school....

What's worse, DD (almost 4) realised that she was losing her best mate to Big School again, and cried/wailed all the time we were waiting for DS to queue up to go into class this morning.

no help but your title is an exact quote of my dd who has just started yr 1. she seemed ok after her 1st day but says they weren't allowed to play but she had to do "jobs" all day, then said she had to paint the walls etc, so I suspect none of it was true.
I just hope they ease them in gently. sad having to grow up.

thanks Eowyn, there was another thread that touched on this (was it forcing homework?). I am going in to the classroom next week myself so will get to see for myself how things are happening, maybe that will help.

DD wailed again this morning about big brother going to school, too

Eowyn, you're so right. DD1 was worried about this, entering into Y3, and I don't know if a) Y2 teacher got it wrong in telling them they wouldn't have any 'choosing' time, or b) new Y3 teacher is easing them in gently.

Either way, the transition seems to be going along fine.

I think Y1 is a bit of a shock to the poor loves.

DD1 was fine yesterday cause they did number work which she's good at and so had some choosing time, but the mum of one of her friends was concerned cause her DD came home complaining that they only did boring work.

When they have a day working on reading and writing I think I'll have trouble

Yep, but they also have a lot of time doing crafts and playing.

I haven't checked out exactly what's going on this year, school meeting about it in a couple of weeks. I strongly suspect that they have to get their days work complete before they are allowed to do 'choosing'. Have also heard that they bring stuff home for completion if not finished in class!

I think in reception there are tables laid out for activities, plus corners for other types of activities. it's like preschool in that respect, the kids move around on their own, play with (or not) whoever they feel like, and do a lot of what they feel like doing.

i get the impression that in Yr 1 the whole class is presented with one activity & they are expected to sit down & do the activity either on their own or in a group , sitting at the same table -- not able to move around to different groups, for instance.
