New schools

How are all the children getting on who have started new schools this term?

DS1, having been withdrawn from his primary school last term because of bullying, has had a great first day at his new secondary school. He seems to have made a couple of nice new friends and enjoyed his lessons. Although we only live a 5 min walk away from the school, I did get a call from him asking if I could pick him up. My initial reaction was "Oh no, what's happened?", but it turned out that he had so much stuff, he couldn't carry it. Phew!

DS3 has just gone from the infants to the juniors and is loving every minute of it - so far. DS2 is miffed that nothing "special" is happening to him school-wise, but I'm quite relieved that I don't have to worry about 3 children enjoying new schools.

hi freckle im glad that school is going well for your dss. both my dds started at their new school yesterday. dd1 in year 2 & dd2 in reception, & thankfully its been a huge success all round. im so relieved

Glad to hear it went well for your DDs. DS1 had another great day today and couldn't stop telling me about his lessons. Let's hope it continues for the next 7 years .

Your ds 1 & 3 must be the same ages as my ds and dd, Freckle - ds has just started secondary, and dd just gone into Yr 3, both today. All seems to have gone well for them, although I'm knackered - and I've still got some more uniform naming to get done!

I'm glad to hear about your ds1 - I remember the awful time you and he had last term - grrrr. Hope the new secondary is a whole lot better.

I think I've done all the uniform. All labelling of books, etc. is now down to him!

Hmm, got a tired ds today, after his first proper day plus travelling on his own. Grumpy teenager-style, moan, moan, it's all mum's fault. Still, sounds like all's OK really. We're expecting him to organise his own stuff (clothes, books) to a large extent, hence the moans.

Glad your DS's are settling down nicely,

DS1 started reception class yesterday - came out buzzing and was really looking forward to going again this afternoon.

Came home with a "Good reading" sticker and a really positive comment in his reading record book.

I had to laugh though, yesterday when I asked him what he'd done the first thing he said was "played on the computer"

Anyone that saw any of my comments about DS1 and nursery will know that computers were by FAR his favourite (and best) 'subject' at nursery LOL.

ds started at his new primary yesterday too. But has told me that today he sat on the bench alone at lunchtime and breaktime He hasnt been assigned a "buddy" to help him settle in which I have to say I thought would happen.

That's a shame, jampots. Could you perhaps suggest it to his teacher if none of the children seem to undertake this task voluntarily? At the boys' junior school, a Y6 child is assigned to each Y3 child when they start (infant school is separate), but I'm not sure if they do this for children moving from other schools.

It's such a shame if a child's first experience of a new school is a bad one. It tends to colour their whole experience of education.

ive spoken to the secretary this morning about ds joining in the "lunch bunch" which is a group of activities which is designed to help children work in teams - large or small - with is open to all juniors. She said she will encourage him to join in

So far Im very happy with the school and I think he will settle in

DS1 is settling in well at his new school. He said that he didn't get lost yesterday, which sounds like a good thing!

Our main challenge for today was DS getting to school on his own, as DH had an early meeting and couldn't take DS2 to his school. DS1 didn't make the school bus, which I thought was the end of the world last week when I found out - but we discovered a public bus route that enables him to make the door-to-door journey in less than 30 minutes, compared to about an hour for the school bus. And it only cost £1, compared to a whopping £3.75 on the school bus!

DD3 started nursery yesterday, and that went well - no tears, just a 'bye, mummy'!
